These devices are known as connectivity devices because their sole purpose it to connect two or more nodes on a network. A node is simply a device on the network such as a computer, server, printer, or another WAP (Wireless Access Point).
Switches are level 2 devices (OSI Layer) so there is no real troubleshooting except power cycling. Some can function at higher levels, these are called Managed Switches.
Amber light on a port means that cable is being accessed at 100 Mbps.
Green light on a port means that cables being accessed at 1 Gbps.
